Most UK cocoa suppliers buy through brokers. We don't. Here's how our direct relationship with our processing partner in Tema, Ghana works — and why it matters for your business.
Our Cocoa Processing Partner in Ghana
Our partner facility is one of Ghana's largest and most established cocoa processors, operating large-scale facilities in Tema. It converts raw COCOBOD-certified Ghanaian cocoa beans into cocoa butter, cocoa mass, cocoa powder, and cocoa cake for export worldwide.
This is not a smallholder or a middleman. A major industrial processor. Decades of operating history. ISO 22000:2018 (Food Safety Management) and ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management) certified. Manufacturing capacity to supply at scale.
Why Direct Matters
In the cocoa supply chain, most small UK suppliers buy from brokers or consolidators who buy from exporters who buy from processors. Each link adds cost. Reduces traceability. Introduces risk.
We buy direct from the facility. No intermediaries. This gives us:
- Guaranteed origin — every product is verifiably Ghanaian, not blended with cheaper origins
- Consistent quality — same processor, same facility, same standards, batch after batch
- Full traceability — from bean intake at the facility to finished product arriving at your door
- Better pricing — no broker markups passed on to you
- Priority access — when global cocoa supply tightens, direct relationships hold. Spot buyers scramble.
How a Typical Order Works
1. We place the order direct
Based on our UK demand forecast and customer orders, we place purchase orders direct with the facility's export team. Product type, quantity, packaging format, required documentation.
2. The facility processes and prepares
Products are manufactured at the Tema facility from COCOBOD-certified beans. Each batch is tested. Certificate of Analysis (COA) issued covering fat content, moisture, free fatty acids, microbiological results, and more.
3. Sea freight to the UK
Products are containerised and shipped from Tema port to the UK — typically Felixstowe or London Gateway. Transit time approximately 4–6 weeks.
4. UK clearance and storage
We handle all UK customs clearance, import documentation, and phytosanitary compliance. Products are transported to our logistics hub in Chelmsford, Essex for storage and dispatch.
5. Dispatch to you
Orders fulfilled from our Chelmsford hub via tracked courier or our own local delivery service (100kg+ orders in Essex, Cambridgeshire, and East London).
When You Need Stock Faster
Sometimes customers need product before our next container arrives. When that happens, we can arrange expedited shipping from Ghana. It costs more than standard sea freight — but it keeps your production line running when timelines tighten.
Part of why we describe ourselves as a supply-reliability partner, not just a supplier: we hold UK stock, and we have faster options when a wholesale order can't wait for the next container.
What You Don't Get When You Buy Through a Broker
Buying through brokers and consolidators is the cheapest way to enter the cocoa market — until something goes wrong. Then the gaps show:
- No direct line to the processor. Quality issue? You escalate through layers, not pick up the phone.
- Origin blending. Many brokers consolidate cocoa from West Africa, South America, and South-East Asia into a single "blended origin" product. Your "Ghana cocoa" may not actually be 100% Ghana.
- No relationship leverage. When global supply tightens, brokers prioritise their largest customers. You go to the back of the queue.
- Slower problem resolution. COA queries, batch traceability, allergen statements — every information request bounces through the chain.
