How It Started

CocoaFoundry didn't begin with a business plan. It began with a phone call.

Our family had been importing Ghanaian food products to the UK for years through our parent company, building relationships with producers and learning the realities of cross-continental supply chains β€” the paperwork, the logistics, the things that go wrong at 3am.

Then a customer asked if we could source shea butter. We could. We did. The supplier we found in Ghana suggested we trial cocoa butter alongside it. Single trial shipment. Everything changed.

Demand was immediate. Chocolatiers, cosmetics makers, and food manufacturers across the UK needed consistent, high-quality single-origin Ghana cocoa butter. Most were struggling to find a reliable supplier. We saw the gap and scaled into it.

The Turning Point

Growth came fast. So did the hardest lesson we've ever learned.

An early batch of cocoa butter didn't meet the standard our customers needed. We could have made excuses. We could have moved the stock quietly. Instead, we pulled every unit, took the financial hit, and went back to the drawing board.

That decision cost us. It also forced us to do something most small importers never achieve β€” we built a direct purchasing relationship with one of Ghana's largest and most established cocoa processors.

No middlemen. No brokers. No third-party warehouses in between. Direct from processor to our UK hub.

That relationship is the foundation of everything CocoaFoundry delivers today.

Why CocoaFoundry Exists

As cocoa became the dominant part of our business, we realised it needed its own identity. Premium single-origin cocoa products deserve more than a line item on a general food import catalogue.

CocoaFoundry was created to give our cocoa range the dedicated focus, branding, and service standard it deserves β€” a standalone operation built for makers, manufacturers, and creators who depend on consistent, lab-verified, traceable cocoa ingredients.

Same warehouse. Same supply chain. New focus.

What We Learned the Hard Way

The early quality issue taught us three things that now define how we operate:

  • Never compromise on source. Every gram comes direct from our partner facility in Ghana. No intermediaries. No blended origins. No shortcuts.
  • Verify everything. Every batch is lab-tested. Certificate of Analysis before it reaches a customer. If it doesn't meet spec, it doesn't ship.
  • Own the problem. When something goes wrong β€” and in supply chains, things do go wrong β€” we don't hide. We fix it, absorb the cost, and make sure it doesn't happen again.

Direct from origin in Ghana

Our partner facility in Tema is one of Ghana's premier cocoa processors. Large-scale facilities. COCOBOD-certified Ghanaian cocoa beans processed into cocoa butter, cocoa mass, cocoa powder, and cocoa cake.

Our direct relationship with the facility means:

  • Guaranteed single-origin Ghanaian cocoa β€” no blends, no substitutions
  • Consistent quality batch after batch
  • Full traceability from bean to finished product
  • Competitive pricing without broker markups
  • Priority access to stock, even when global supply tightens

Not a sales pitch. The result of a relationship we built by proving ourselves β€” first by returning substandard product at our own expense, then by showing up consistently as a buyer the facility could rely on.

"Whatever It Takes" β€” Not a Slogan

Family-run business. We don't hide behind automated ticket systems, slow bureaucracies, or third-party excuses. When a client calls, we answer. We act.

If your stock is at risk. If your machines are about to stop. If a contract depends on a last-minute batch.

We will do whatever it takes to keep you moving β€” including expedited supply direct from Ghana when necessary.

Your supply chain becomes our responsibility. Your deadlines become ours.

Case Study: Deliciously Guilt Free

Dan Greef runs Deliciously Guilt Free, a craft chocolate operation based at Fare Acres Farm in Cambridgeshire. His production line depends on a consistent supply of premium cocoa butter. Consistency is non-negotiable when you're producing artisan chocolate bars to exacting standards.

Dan became one of our earliest trade customers. As our sourcing relationship developed, we worked closely with him to understand exactly what his production needed β€” from flavour profile and aroma to crystallisation performance and melt behaviour.

When Dan needed cocoa butter urgently and our sea freight was weeks away, we didn't ask him to wait. We coordinated directly with our Ghana facility and expedited his order to keep his production schedule on track. Then personally delivered it to his farm in Cambridgeshire.

Today, Dan orders regularly in multi-box quantities. We price-match to ensure he always gets competitive rates alongside the quality and service he depends on. He has listed CocoaFoundry as an approved supplier for his environmental health inspections β€” a mark of trust that means everything to us.

"Really happy with the cocoa butter. It's good stuff again. Keep that supply as I'll keep buying. Great partnership β€” let's do this."
